Jobs safe from AI: why the tasks matter more than the title.

No job is safe from AI, and almost no job is lost to it. What is safe is a kind of work: tasks that need judgement without a precedent, trust that has been built, and someone who takes responsibility for the outcome. Every job has some of that work. The question is how much of yours.

What makes a task human-led

Three things keep a task with a person. Judgement where there is no precedent to follow. Relationships, where people act on what you say because of who you are, not what your title is. And responsibility, where a mistake would do real harm and someone has to stand behind the call.

Tasks like these are the anchor of a job. AI may help with them. It does not do them in your place.

Two jobs, two very different mixes

A secondary school teacher, in our standard example, keeps 15 of 32 tasks human-led. AI handles only 3 on its own. A software developer keeps 2 of 47 human-led, and 36 are AI-led.

Neither job is going away. But the shape of the two weeks is completely different, and so is the right move. The teacher's edge is already in the work; the task is to make it visible and portable. The developer's value is moving to the 9 tasks done together with AI, and to the judgement about what to build at all.

Why “AI-proof jobs” lists mislead

A list of safe professions assumes everyone in the profession does the same work. They don't. It also assumes the mix is fixed. It isn't: the tasks people hand to AI change with every release of the tools.

The useful question is personal and current: of the tasks I actually do this week, which are anchored, which are augmented, and which have already moved to the tool?

Find the safe share of your own job

Your Career Audit does this for your own task list. You keep the tasks you do, remove the ones you don't, and add what's missing. Every task lands in a lane. You see your runway score, how long before AI reaches most of your core tasks, set against 2,441 occupations.

Then it tells you what to do with each lane: stop leading with the automated work, grow the augmented work, and make the anchored work yours to keep.
